It's likely a problem of sampling and model.
Let's do a thought experiment.
For hapiness (and hapiness is not everything), character is more important than looks, let's say it's 80/20.
Now you have 4 possibilities (to simplify, obviously it's a continuum).
1 - hotter guy, highly compatible character : 100% hapiness
2 - hotter guy, lowly compatible character : 20% hapiness
3 - uglier guy, highly compatible character : 80% hapiness
4 - uglier guy, lowly compatible character : 0% hapiness
But while 2 can be reasonably common (for example let's say you have one "2" for two "1"), 4 is likely to be extremely rare (to simplify let's say non existant).
Then average hapiness for hotter guys is : (100*2+20)/3=73.33%
And hapiness for ulgier guys is : 80%
Being ugly is detrimental but in average women in couple with an uglier guy are happier.
