In high schools, there are number grades as well. And in college, people often say "first year" "second year" etc.

Brits need to calm down about this. The reason it was changed was because the word "philosopher" has a different meaning in the US than it does in England. It's not a "dumbed down" word, it's a word with a different meaning. If you say "philosopher" in the US, nobody is going to think "wizard". If you're going to get pissy about that one little language difference, then you may as well get mad about every other language into which Harry Potter has been translated.

It's not, though, because the word "philosopher" has a different meaning in the US than it does in England. You say "philosopher" in the United States, and NOBODY thinks "wizard".
