This is the problem! Some People have always sought to deny rights of other people in the name of "decency" and "morals". Why? Because they were raised that way and are too short sighted to see trough this bullsh*t,or because they are embittered and they want to make up for that by holding onto such things and forcing them onto others, to look morally superior.
Something is only wrong when it harms people. Gay marriage does not harm people,if some people take offense its their fault. Don't you think it is a tad immoral to take offense of other people having rights?

Lightining is very little energy on the grand scale. Each lightning contains much energy but there is too few of them.
As for nuclear waste, burry it in meters of cement and lead, and it will cause no trouble, or try to reuse it.
But the ultimate solution is fusion as it produces little waste. Once we have fusion we could recycle the old nuclear waste to breed Tritium(Third isotope of H) to use as a fuel in fusion plants.

See pebble bed reactors, they would be the ideal solution until we develop fusion.
A pebble bed reactor requires little maintenance, is very simple and uses helium instead of water as a coolant, which cannot become irradiated or bring radioactive material into solution, so even if there is a leak, its much less of a problem.

Don't forget that all Nuclear catastrophes were cauesd by human errors.
I live in Hungary, one of the most seismically inactive countries, yet our plant is safer against quakes than the Fukushima plant was. If safety rules are followed, everything will go nice&clean.
