Actually, the television series captured quite a broad spectrum of viewers, despite it being "fanime". Adults and kids alike; it was rather impressive. So the fact that they changed so much really just kills it.

See, the reason I played Pokemon when I was a kid was because Pokemon was simple and fun and not dragged down by super-complicated bullshit. Yu-Gi-Oh! was like that (and still is), and I didn't like how overly-complicated it was, so I never played it. Now Pokemon is just as complicated as Yu-Gi-Oh and Bakugan and the like. They drained the fun out of it by changing nearly everything. It blends in now instead of standing out.
