you can't recoup 200 years of near-genocidal exploitation, missed out investment, social engineering out of civilizational institutions in 80 odd years, especially when the last decades before independence the british did their utmost to seed societal problems, on top of what they were already doing for centuries, alas it was no longer pure profit oriented but playing divide and conquer, setting india up so that it would collapse and ask the british to come govern them again.
