I might be wrong, but I believe these are (or were) ecologically extinct at one point. I was at a nature preserve not too long ago where they were breeding these, with intent to reintroduce them to the wild similar to the grey wolves out near Yellowstone.

There's also a problem with them interbreeding with Coyotes instead of eachother, making getting their numbers up more difficult. Unsurprisingly, according to the preserve I was at, the cause of their decline was a combination of trapping for their fur, and hunting them as "pests."
