I just realized looking at this that his original design went through the trouble of not giving him nipples. Despite making a cartoon about a half-naked ripped dude.

Yeah, I guess I was thinking of freedom as in an ordered system, not actual freedom.

But what they protect ultimately depends on the laws in place, I agree on that. They don't protect "freedom" per se, but they can when the country they serve is keen on respecting its people's freedom. And yeah, individuals among that institution can do more wrong than good, I agree on that too, and for that reason I'm greatly in favor of a rigorous examination and control of what police officers actually do. They should strive to be irreproachable, because of the power and status given to them.

I understand your point of view, on a semantic level you are right. I don't think many of us would like "the real deal" when it comes to freedom, though. Think of those last episodes of Evangelion: among some weird things, the part where Shinji is basically in a world his mind is making up, and he creates a "ground": as the voice says, he restricted, all by himself, his infinite freedom in this imaginary world, where he was floating about in nothingness, because that was too frightening of a world to live in. He cut away at his liberty to give himself something to stand upon, and not feel as lost/alone
It might not be the actual concept of freedom, but I feel much more free when I can feel safe, and when order ensures chaos doesn't come around (or not too much, at least). I guess I view actual real-life freedom as a more organized thing than the "do whatever you want" freedom. Well it's the one I want, anyway. To me the necessary boundaries are the building blocks of a realistic freedom, where as I first said, others' freedom doesn't come in the way of yours (be it raping, stealing, murdering me, with my own strength as the only defense).

Nice debating tho :)

well yes that goes without saying

But imagine the best utopia you could come up with (in regards to the law), where there would be "only good laws" and freedom would be the most important thing for the country. If there isn't anyone to prevent those who do not abide by the law from doing "wrong", and protect those who do abide by it, then those laws are nothing but guidelines, without any reason not to disobey them if your personal interest benefits from doing so. And I don't buy the "if there is no poverty/need, no one will break the law", even though they are huge factors. Greed and lust do exist and cannot be overlooked, in my opinion.

Indeed, they "just" enforce the law, but what I was saying is it's necessary and fundamental, to protect your freedom, since your freedom is guaranteed, in a society (yes we do live in one), only by the law.

It kind of goes hand in hand.
As we say in France, your freedom ends where the freedom of others starts.

So if the police is to enforce the laws (including those that guarantee your rights and freedom) and protect you from those who go against them, then yes, they also protect your freedom :)
