A small nation has less chance of being ***ed as it doesn't not represent a geopolitcal threat. Switzerland, without the EU, has proven they could grow a solid industry and a great standard of life. Moreover, being a small nation doesn't mean you can't be part of alliances and partnerships.
EU is not an alliance. It is a "thing" that was designed by jurists and the US, to control of European finances and companies by centralizing its power and removing financial limitations and borders. It was designed to be ruled by Germany and to benefit Germany only in exchange of US "protection".
France, Italy, Spain and Greece would definitly be better without the EU and Euro. The rest is less impacted because either the Euro is tailored for their economy or are part of the Reich zone (eastern countries) and used to open german factories.
For example, 80% of relocations of French companies happened within Europe. Meaning french jobs taken by polish, romanians, or czecs. Of course they are happy.
