If, however, there was a place untouched by the authoritarians, I imagine those hippies to be quite content there. An apocalyptic government would probably be auth right, but I imagine some faction situation where slowly new countries based on mass migration are born. Not to mention most people just dying.

To your other point, not only US politics, but especially european politics, has definitely seen a shift in the past decade or so. Of course the world continues to evolve and left politics slowly do stuff, but the pure numbers put up by european parliaments and governments across the land show hard right is on the up.

Thinking of lib left as gender neutral bathrooms and hippie communes full of clueless college kids is just as reductive as thinking of con right as racist whites with bibles, guns, and hatred for the poor. Western establishments are undoubtedly swinging quite right for a few years now, and it has not been working out for the majority of people, who are not extremist. It's so easy to forget that this decline in living standards has been felt very strongly for much longer outside of the 'nice' part of the world. When the only option becomes war, then you may convince me that right would take the lead.

Since the level of life is truly dropping everywhere around the world, I would hazzard a guess that most people are gonna be lib left. The the only people who remain conservative are the people who can afford to turn a blind eye to the horrors of the world, which is an increasingly small group. Most people are running out of means, of all kinds. I'm not even advocating for any politics, only that people should realize their comfortable lives are built on eternal and increasing suffering and the tipping point where it gets a lot worse for everyone is not far. And anyone who takes interest in the world around us can see this.

Of course the people living in prosperity brought on by the suffering of others would vote to keep it that way. I live here too, but god, don't pretend we deserve any of this by default.
