Heath Ledger's joker persona would have absolutely loved what happens to Joaquin Phoenix's iteration. Since now no one can claim any moral high ground, every single person is crooked inside and most crimes stay unpunished, unless the media hyper-fixates on them, which was exactly what he tried to prove in the dark knight movie. In this new joker franchise the writers would've proved Ledger's joker right within the first 5 minutes, and yet for some reason they insisted on weaving a morality lesson in the folie à deux movie which isn't focusing as much on philosophy and social psychology as the dark knight did. The first one was good because it was a character study of a mentally unstable social outcast who never had any control over anything in his life and almost accidentally spearheaded a string of social protests and riots. Nothing wrong with creators using raw topics, such as rape in this case, as plot devices, but it's been used in such a comical and nonsensical way here that one's left wondering how is this anything but a thin veiled "what goes around ...comes back around" morality. A lesson they'd better better not try to teach this franchises audience because the tone in the universe they set themselves is not nearly coherent enough to pull that off in any credible way. Why would thirty guards care about the death of a popular TV-host so much they'd risk putting their livelihood on the line to *** up an unstable patient who recently received insane amounts of media attention?
