I don't know much about them. He can be out of water for a long time though, am I wrong? Judging by all the dampness on the walls that place must be very humid.

I had to google that. I wish I didn't. The Marker(s) are giant monuments that broadcast a signal to organic lifeforms' brains. Make them hallucinate, drive them crazy, turn them into necromorphs, making them its slaves. Dead Space lore.
