You got that wrong about lawyers- I think it's supposed to be about the greater society and how everyone sees teachers,compared to what "successful" people do,a lawyer is just an example. The author of the poem thinks that the society is very condescending and doesn't really appreciate teachers the way they're supposed to be. You can see that by the jokes at the start and by the laughing women with the wine- gives a very condescending environment.

I think he's right,though. People really are too judgemental about other people's professional choices. Teaching is just one of them,I suppose,and women really are attracted to money and power.
