Its not manic depression ( also known as bipolar disorder). What he is doing is a defence mechanism. Sounds to me like cognitive dissonance and that part of him has become narcissistic to combat his daily self negative talk. The key is to find balance, accept that we cant control everything and reduce hurry sickness. It takes time, willpower and being persistent.
