The island itself was claimed by both Kenya and Uganda.
Much if not most of the Ugandan protests revolve around the lucrative fishing rights, mostly for valuable Nile perch. On 13 March 2009, several government ministers, met in Kampala, Uganda, and reached an agreement that the fishermen from both countries be allowed to continue conducting business as usual, until the boundary was determined by experts. They also agreed that Uganda withdraw the 48 policemen it had deployed on Migingo to "mantain law and order".

The island has a population of about 131, mostly fishermen and fish traders, who are served by four pubs, a number of brothels, and a pharmacy.

We had over a dozen others on one side, but the People decided they wanted a racist, sexist, psychopathic man-child, because he 'keeps it real' and makes sense to their equally-simple…thought processes, for lack of a better term.

Meanwhile, the Establishment on the other side decided they wanted a walking security risk who thinks laws are for peasants, rather than a forward-thinking self-described-democratic-socialist whose been fighting for civil rights at least as far back as the '60s, because socialism in any form is scary so we'll just go with the one who agrees with what we're already saying.
