team fotress 2 is the exception. the only benefits paying members have over non-paying is that they have more inventory space which doesn't actually help mid-match, and also they get a hat. but by tf2 standards, that hat is pretty cool as its a HAT. and in tf2, if you have a hat, you are automatically vastly superior to those without them, at least in the community. gamewise, hats are just interesting to look at.
