The EU can certainly be criticized, and I understand the feeling that bureaucrats in Brussels taking decisionis for beetroot farmers in Croatia as well as beef farmers in Spain when their interest might be conflictual feels absurd sometimes.

I also somewhat understand this idea of identity dilution (although blaming it on immigration policies always is a bit of a broken record imho, but to each their own). I get that each specific small country has distinct culture, and one might feel like it's being washed away by some kind of bland Netflix hivemind. I really do get it.

That being said, I just want to take this chance to remember that EU was founded after WW2, when a set of diverging alliances pushed countries into a global massacre.
The EU was founded on the idea that we can focus on what makes us alike rather than different, and what binds us together can prevent us from killing each other. The EU was founded with the main goal of preventing more war on the continent, which it has succeeded at for about 70 years.

So maybe these ideas were perverted by focusing too much on economy and the market. And maybe, the values of tolerance and welcoming are truely abused by outsiders, although it is not what I personally think, I can be wrong. But the EU also brought us good things.

As a French student, I took an Erasmus year in Berlin. After that year, I decided to stay there longer, and I could just register in the University without having to jump through hoops, just because I was a EU citizen.
I did not need to apply for German citizenship, I did not have to worry about a visa, I did not need to bother with exchanging currencies. It felt like going to your friendly neighbour to have a good time, and it was awesome. There I met Italians, Croatians, Spaniards, Germans, but also Turks and Ukranians and Russians and many more, that have remained my friends to this day.

So call me utopic naive leftard globalist elite, or whatever else, but I am grateful that I was born here, and even if the EU is flawed, I am thankful for what it brought me.
