Looked at objectively though, not through the eyes of someone who had or has not read the books, they ARE better.
If I asked a tv-shower to tell me about Aegon's landing, or The First Men, or the Children of the Forrest, or what caused Robert to Rebel no one could tell me. The books offer significantly more depth and exploration than the TV series ever could.
I'm not saying you can't be a fan having not read the books, i'm saying you can't call yourself a die-hard fan if you haven't.
