I think they aren't allowed to read the books so they won't know when their character gets killed because they signed a contract for a certain period of time or something.

Well, what were you expecting them to do? fly spaceships and shoot lasers? It was a show about a guy who cooked meth, obviously they were not going to kill 50 people every episode.. srsly you might be more comfortable watching cartoons..
