Studies have shown that dopamine ramps up in expectation of a reward instead of just as a result of a reward, especially when engaging in a habit. By changing up the reward, the brain stops expecting the reward, which means it stops ramping up dopamine in expectation of the reward. Since this ramp up of dopamine is what triggers the cravings in the first place, the cravings subside.

It is apparently also possible to redirect a craving by doing something equally as stimulating instead of the thing you crave, which tricks the brain into craving that instead.

You know how some birds do a little dance on the dirt to draw worms to the surface? One theory was that the taps from their feet made the worms think it was raining, causing them to go to the surface to escape drowning, but a new study showed that the taps actually mimic the sound of a digging mole.

They discredit anyone who might become a leader or who tries to show the populace how they're bound by the system, then make those who see the chains hopeless about the possibility of escape.

This is not exclusive to game developers. Most software developers don't really know how their own code works and this is only getting worse with the rise of vibe coding.
