As a Machinist, this is the standard thing that I work with every day.

The apprenticeship program has taken a severe dive since the late 1980s. Unions have become more about politics than the working force and this has caused a lot of dissension among Union and Corporate representatives. These days, most employers want to see some sort of Certification or Degree ALONG WITH some measurable experience in the field...even for entry-level positions. I headed QC in a machine shop for two years before I was laid off but the experience wasn't enough according to most companies. Now that I have an AAS in Machining Technology, the type of experience I have isn't what most companies are looking for.
