I might be remembering parts of the book wrong, but is not the baseness of man like a recurring theme throughout the book? Although I get the feeling Dostoyevsky ultimately thinks man is good as illustrated by the youngest brother, he also portrays man as base, ugly, envious, lustful, petty etc. This image gives me the same vibe ..
