Those (current) sections are indeed not helping much, but I do think that the idea behind it is a small step in the right direction. If the system is properly worked out (including feedback) it might save the fresh page from a shitload of crappy content.

I agree. The admins are doing their best to improve everything so racism and dark humour can provide us our daily laughs with even more ease. Filtering the community by dividing the site into ('shitty') topics is a good way to solve the problem we are dealing with right now: the increase of pink-minded users and their (horrible) content on the fresh (and sometimes even rising or front) page. We can't stop them, but why not divert them?
