Serious answer: because it's easier to see him as a monster rather than as a guy who thought he was acting for the good of mankind and went on to do horrible things because of that. Admitting that he was no monster would make us question the things WE consider to be good and how far we are willing to go for it.

Well I agree that having guns is bad. My own opinion on this is that the US needs some alternative counterpower first, and then there will be no reason to have a constitutional right to have guns.

Unfortunatedly, this is way too sound an argument for politics. Especially in America, the country of "if I close my eyes the problem will go away".
