It is being built, in fact its almost finished, so either way its too late for public opinion. I don't think the problem is really the funding (state has been injecting billions in the project for years) but that competing companies fail to setup efficient engineering solutions.

You're right, maintenance is a problem for everything but the high risk of contamination requires huge and very expensive operations of control (especially to avoid contamination of cooling water).
This could indeed be avoided by EPR type reactors but its just a complete mess to build, not only in France but also in China which is part of the reason why many provinces are still building coal power plants.
I really think the only long-term solution is nuclear fusion with the ITER project.

problem is the number of things that often go wrong with nuclear reactors; in France we have like 60 of them or something and many of them are getting pretty old. The State was planning to build a new generation reactor in the north(the EPR) but the construction has been staggering for 10 years because it represents many engineering and mostly logistic difficulties (many different competing companies working on different parts of the project). And besides this huge mess, many of the old reactors are malfunctioning and require a lot of maintenance and work to keep running with moderate efficiency, because the government doesn't want to invest in another shithole project for new reactors.

ITER is the only true long term solution I think, but again, it has been staggering for many years due to diplomatic and other bullshit issues. We will probably see meaningful results from it in like 10-15 years, when it'll be too late...
Looks like were ***ed guys...

1763, Sir Jeffrey Amherst, commander-in-chief of British forces in North America, wrote to Colonel Henry Bouquet at Fort Pitt:

“You will do well to try to inoculate the Indians [with smallpox] by means of blankets, as well as to try every other method, that can serve to extirpate this execrable race.”

Look it up

yea the BBC thing is pretty hilarious

But generally speaking i think that your statement is false from both historical and economic point of view

French economist Thomas Piketty basically spent his entire career studying income inequalities and concluded that it comes from the ratio between national GDP and revenue on capital, nothing to do with an uneven repartition of work force

I recommend his book "Capital in the 21st century", personally learnt a lot, far more accessible and contemporary than Marx's Kapital
