I agree and disagree... You can find most of them! Road to redemption (Jean Valjean), consequences of poverty (Thenardier family), The limits of Justice (Javert).. So you do see them because the musical is based on the book. However, the problem is that you cannot put as much strength into these points... Most details are forgotten... That's why I think you can watch the film and like it but it will never replace Hugo's work.

I agree, they could have changed names... Even though the book isn't followed 100%, the main ideas put forward in Les Misérables are still there. No way near as good as the books but still quite interesting.
