a fun fact about oxygen is that there is only one element which oxidizes better - fluorine, a gas as aggressive as it gets. so its almost as if earths organisms are addicted to breathing the second most aggressive elemental oxidant just to survive. as you said this killed almost all organisms on earth when atmospheric oxygen emerged

If things look similar on chemical basis, they have similar effects in the body. Second phytoestrogens like for example the isoflavones dont "look like" estrogen, as they dont have an steroid structure - though they can take a similar conformation and therefore interact with estrogen receptors. therefore they have an estrogenic effect and are called phytoestrogens.
