last proper stick i saw was a fairly good mace that i got from middle of forest floor, it had this overgrown LUMP at the heavy end with multiple branches sticking out in several directions and very straight and solid handle at the other
i swung it against a tree ten times before cracks started appearing in the middle, as such i discarded it, as it was, unfortunately, not battleworthy and would break under further stress, but the shape and weight distribution was almost ideal
