Poland defended Europe and Christianity.

Rohirrim!

Darth_Revan · 7-Year Club · 2 points · 5 years ago
The Rohirim are based on the Normans, in equipment at the very least, not the Hussars.

TheManWhoCan · Verified · 2 points · 5 years ago
the charge of the rohirim at the siege of minas tirith is based on the charge of the hussars at the siege of vienna, lifting the siege.

people actually hate Christianity (and Europe)

Do you prefer an alternate reality where Poland minded its own business and ottomans ruled from Greece to Austria?

Darth_Revan · 7-Year Club · 2 points · 5 years ago
If the Ottomans conquered Vienna they would still be massively overextended, even more so than it was in our timeline. There is no way the Ottomans would have been able to hold on to it as it would have represented a massive threat to the incredibly wealthy Italian citystates, the Pope, the Holy Roman Emperor, Naples and France.
It wasn't Polish heroism that would kick the Ottomans out of Europe, it was their inefficient and corrupt political system that inevitably doomed them to stagnation and regression.
Besides, the Ottomans cared very little about converting heretics, leaving jews, orthodox, catholic and dualist christians and shia muslims be in general. Austria would still recognizably be Austria, the same way that hundreds of years of Ottoman subjugation didn't change the national identity of Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia etc.

in alternate reality not only Poles are capable of doing this.
And is very hard to argue with alternate reality

THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED

kosobi · Wise · 1 points · 5 years ago *
it's really showing when you have to reach that far into the past. Poland is a shithole now... a slowly improving one, but still.

An anime profile picture and a boner for older times when poles defended christianity. That's an unprecedented level of cringe, so at least you did accomplish that.

Nazgul · Commenter of the Month · 4 points · 5 years ago
And how far would you say one can reach in history to take credit for the exploits? If you think there is a limit to that, what is it?
Or would you say that every nation is worth as much as it's current citizens and the past should not be taken into consideration? If yes, isn't it unfair that Israel recieves holocaust reparations from people who are not responsible for it?
And with this logic, is inheritance even just? And if a debtor dies, shouldn't his debt become nothing aswell??

kosobi · Wise · 2 points · 5 years ago
I would say you should only take credit for the things you yourself have actually done/contributed to. Being born hundreds of years after an event x doesn't make you in any way a part of it.

And I think comparing it to actual material inheritance is a false equivalence fallacy.

mygall · 6-Year Club · 2 points · 5 years ago
So by your logic France is still the greatest military nation then ?
History is even more History now than it was a 100 years ago, because our way of living is completely different. The world we live in is brand new. Nothing that happened in history can be used now for pride or for example, because it's from a time we have nothing to relate it to.
And of course Israel should not recieve any reparations. And inheritance is a tricky deal. In most country the further you are from the parent, the more you have to pay for that inheritance. And you can of course reject it, same as the debts.

I think you are looking too deep into this post. Nobody idiolizes anything here, it's just a reaction for the sake of likes (as expected from grandayyyyy)

I get your point (and share it to some degree) but saying somebody's education and values are not related whatsoever to the country the grew in isn't totally right. So saying Poland had nothing to do with Curie's intellect, while not being wrong (obviously a country can't "give" anything), it's technically not right either because had she been born in a country which didn't have access to such education, she wouldn't be a thing.

Yeah I knew that but it still applies, the Flying University had access to said knowledge.

But yeah maybe Marie Curie wasn't the best example but you get my point.

The nation isn't some inanimate imaginary system though. Its composed of, and interacts with real people, if you were not born where you were born you would have been a completely different person.

Admiration of ones nation can inspire people from that nation to accomplish great deeds themselves, out of a feeling of responsibility to live up to their ancestor's greatness, and i believe that thats a much more healthy source of inspiration than the pursuit of wealth and fame that comes by idolizing the individual alone.

Nationalism can lead to great changes, and i admit some of them where bad, just like with any ideology. Its true that the nazis used it to promote their worldview, but you cant deny that those who fought the nazis shared similar feelings about their own countries, and where fighting to defend them. Moreover it motivated the people who lived under colonial regimes to fight for their self determination, and is the main reason we adopted the nation-state model, which is by far a better alternative to feudalism.

And to say that is the only reason people go to war over is unfair. People killed each other before in the name of God and after in the name of freedom n democracy. Does that mean who should get rid of those aswell? WW2 just happens to be the most devastating because of the technology we had, and if death tolls are a way to go then the most destructive wars where those of Chinese niqqas killing each other over politics.

Oof this turned out to be longer than what i expected.

poland's demise is the sole reason for the world wars in europe, had there been a strong buffer state inbetween tsarist russia and imperial germany, there would be no great war and germany would be keen on keeping their alliance with russia

or if they both wanted to keep a buffer state between them like civilized empires

damnstraight · 4 points · 5 years ago
"poland's demise is the sole reason for the world wars in europe"

No. WW1 is like different campers setting different fires in a big forrest, and then the fires fuses with each other and then everybody dies.
WW2 is a sequel.
