Well, it is basically the Old Testament that prohibits pork, first for jews, then for christians, then for muslims, as it was the book that all these abrahamic religions held dear and were based on. It then became a cultural thing - the jews had a means of distancing themselves from their polytheist neighbours by not domesticating pigs. Also pigs, as omnivores, can be seen as a competitor for food in times of need, especially in a tribal, nomadic society.
