first of all, let's just make it clear that private charitable activity does not work. if the entire system is based on profit, then only the most greedy become truly successful. and the most greedy are incredibly unlikely to give to charity. example: modern day USA.

secondly, why couldn't a system be built where the free market (profit driven) exists and is allowed to do its thing, but where the profits are controlled (TAXED). in a society like that it would be possible to become a multi-millionaire and be far richer than the average human, but it would be impossible to be rich on the scales of big bank owners, Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos, aso. there's no reason to let singular people control that amount of wealth, it benefits no one. those people can never feasibly spend their money and so it is effectively lost from society.

but through the government this surplus wealth could be redistributed so that no one had to live in poverty. some people are allowed to be very rich, but no one is allowed to be poor.

on top of that ensure that education and healthcare are free for everyone. this would give everyone roughly equal opportunities to contribute (business/science) to society as well.
